Jennifer Ferguson: Director, Alternative Legal Services – Baker McKenzie
Hear from Jennifer, a QUB alumna, as she talks about studies, her current career and the legal sector including what advice she would give to current students. Some of her thoughts include:
“A good degree from a Russell Group University like Queens will really show your level of intelligence and allows you to flex into lots of different areas. I attended many events at Queens, which were the trigger point for the career that I ended up taking, which wasn’t what I planned at the outset. My advice to students is that engagement is crucial in cutting your own career - attend and speak up at company events or presentations, as these may lead to follow-up conversations and enable you to attain vacation schemes or training contracts down-the-line.
I think extracurriculars definitely matter; you may have a similar degree classification to other students so what sets you apart is that part-time job, volunteering, etc. A career in law is not easy, but having some real-life experience outside of pure study is hugely helpful in demonstrating that you are a competent and resilient person.”
