QUB School of Law Student Shines at the Law Schools Global League Summer School
Celebrating our global academic partnership with Law Schools Global League.
The School of Law at Queen's University Belfast is proud to be a member of the Law Schools Global League (LSGL). This partnership underscores our commitment to providing students with unparalleled global opportunities. This year, through our collaboration, the School selected one of its standout students, Denizhan Törün, to participate in the prestigious 12th LSGL Summer School held at the Universidad De Los Andes Law School in Colombia.
Postgraduate student, Denizhan, who previously enjoyed an outstanding academic year supported by the Jean Monnet Scholarship Programme, was nominated by Professor Joan Loughrey, Head of the Law School, and Dr Conor McCormick, Director of Graduate Studies in the Law School. This recognition was bolstered by financial and moral support from the university, including the JETSET Award.
Reflecting on his experience, Denizhan shared, "This experience allowed me to meet participants from prestigious universities around the world, such as the University of Freiburg and FGV Rio Law, making new friends from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds. During this time, I formed strong bonds with Colombian peers from the University of Los Andes, enriching my experience in Bogotá with their warm hospitality and vibrant culture."
The curriculum at the LSGL Summer School was broad and intellectually stimulating, offering a range of courses that addressed contemporary global issues, from "Protest, Policing, and Social Contestation", which examined the complex dynamics between protest movements seeking social transformation, policing strategies aimed at controlling civil unrest, and the legal frameworks regulating rights of speech, assembly, and
public dissent, to 'Fiscal Sociology: Comparative Perspectives on Taxation, Law, and Inequality,' which provided insights into the relationship between tax laws and social justice, alongside 'The Role of The Constitution in Bringing Socio-Economic Equality and Protecting Vulnerable Groups,' which examined how constitutional frameworks can address social inequalities with examples from South Africa and Latin America.
Denizhan was grateful for the experience: "This year has been extraordinary, culminating in an unforgettable end. While the knowledge I have gained is invaluable, the memories and friendships I have made are even more significant. The LSGL Summer School has not only broadened my academic horizons but also enriched my personal and professional life." on final reflection, he had this to say: "Thank you, Queen's University Belfast, and thank you, LSGL Summer School, for this incredible opportunity. My experience has truly been a highlight of my academic journey, and I look forward to applying the insights and skills I have gained in my future endeavours, particularly as I plan to pursue a PhD focused on regulating technology and addressing the associated inequalities within corporate governance."
Head of School Joan Loughrey commented, "As an outward-facing global Law School we are proud to provide these transformative global opportunities for our students and I am really pleased that Denizhan's time with us has been so beneficial while he studied for his masters in LLM Law. We wish Denizhan every success as he returns to his position as Rapporteur Judge at the Ministry of Justice in Turkey and good luck with his further studies."
Queen's University Belfast School of Law is committed to fostering global academic partnerships and providing its students opportunities to excel and grow internationally. The experiences and insights gained by its students through programs like the LSGL Summer School are a testament to the School's dedication to academic excellence and global engagement.
