Project Description

Transitional Justice, Oral History and Reconciliation in Germany and Northern Ireland: The Role of Archives and Digital Thinking

Full Economic Cost:       £84,885

Taking East Germany and Northern Ireland as primary case studies, this salaried PhD project will examine the impact of archival work on broader transitional justice (TJ) processes. In particular, comparisons will be drawn between the development of the Eastern German Stasi Archives (pre-digital) and the Oral History Archive, proposed as part of a package of measures to address the legacy of the past in Northern Ireland. Drawing on the broader transitional justice on dealing with the past, this will facilitate analysis of two key sets of dynamics: the relationship between a) oral and archival history and ‘truth recovery’ b) digitisation and reconciliation.

Awarding Bodies

European Commission: Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions
